Your Child is Learning to Anticipate

What Toddlers Know:  Your child is learning to anticipate. Call and response, patterned sounds, and imitation are all activities that help develop a child's sense of anticipation and predictably. Just as she is learning to repeat or "fill in the blanks" verbally, she will enjoy guessing what comes next in musical, movement, and sound patterns.

What You Can Do:
Read a favorite book together. Stop before the last word, and let your child fill in the blank!
Sing along with your Zoo Train Move-Along CD as you go about your daily activities. Errands to run? Pop the CD in your car player to continue the fun! Point at things around the house. Give your child a list of rhyming words and encourage her to name the item. (ie. point at the dog and say "Is that a log? Is it a frog? No its a .....!")

Music Time:
Classics for Children (Decca Records 1999). Debussy's "The Children's Corner," Bizet's "Children's Games," Shumann's "Scenes from Childhood," Provofieff's "Peter and the Wolf" -- this is a wonderful inclusive collection of classical favorites.

Book Time:
Polar Bear Polar Bear, What Do You Hear? by Bill Martin, illustrated by Eric Carle (Henry Holt, 1991). Sparkling text and jewel-tone collages lead readers through a zooful of animals, as each is asked the repeating question, "what do you hear?" The roaring, snorting, braying, fluting answers make for perfect read-aloud fun.

Make homemade rattles and shakers with household items and chug, chug, chug along with your baby to this adorable Kindermusik classic.

Use items around the house to make homemade shakers and rattles, coming up with many varied sounds -- or timbres-- as you can. Child-safe pill bottles, small travel containers, and Tupperware make great shakers, while cereal, dried beans, rice, and popcorn kernels are perfect as fillers. Now make some train sounds as you play along with Little Red Caboose, chugging and choo-ing and shaking and rattling!

The Power of Talking (and Singing) to your Baby!

The Power of Talking (and Singing) to your Baby!

Now for the drum-roll deserving, edge-of-your-seat, epic, astrological, million dollar question. What makes a good parent?

Parent Talking To Baby Supports Child Development
We’d cue the drum-roll but that would be redundant. Of all the pillars of child-rearing– instilling good behavior, table manners, diligence and potty training– the most critical aspect of parenting is something so obvious it’s practically shouting at us. The answer is simply that good parents talk to their babies.

Hart & Risley Study – Parents Talking to their Children

A 1995 study by Betty Hart and Todd R. Risley at the University of Kansas found that parent-to-child baby talk is perhaps the most critical part of early child development (specifically from birth until age three). Hart and Risley studied 42 families from varying socioeconomic backgrounds over six years, measuring the speech patterns between parents and their children. Not only did they measure how many words parents from affluent, working-class, and welfare dependent families spoke to their children per hour — they measured the number of “conversational turns” and ratio of positive and negative tone to the conversation.

The results?

Affluent parents spoke over 2,100 words per hour to their babies. Working-class 1,200 words per hour. Welfare… 600 words per hour. When it came to conversational tone, Hart and Risley found the ratio of affirming (encouraging) words to prohibition words to be 32:6 per hour. For working-cass families, families accumulated 12 affirmatives and seven prohibitions per hour (approximately 2:1 affirmatives to negatives). For the average welfare family, the ratio of affirmations to prohibitions was 1:2.
On one hand, these discrepancies are easy to explain. Families on welfare are under more stress and may not have the same educational backgrounds to garner a generational vocabulary. But overwhelmingly, welfare parents were reportedly unaware that talking was connected to their child’s intellectual development.

“The greater the number of words children heard from their parents or caregivers before they were 3, the higher their IQ and the better they did in school.”

Hart and Risley’s study, reviewed in this recent NYTimes article by Tina Rosenberg, cuts to the heart of Kindermusik’s mission. The power of talking can just as easily be said for the power of singing. Whether you’re transporting your child to the stony, riverside city of Galway singing “All the Way to Galway” or counting with “Wheels on the Bus,” you’re exposing your child to the world’s complexities in a fun, nurturing way– not leaving them without a means of expression and understanding.
In Kindermusik classes for babies and toddlers, there are many activities that support parent and child interaction, especially involving talking and singing with your child. For example, in one of our music classes for toddlers, we have fun with a song called Morning Song which allows parents to sing with their child, letting the kids insert the sounds an animal makes when they get up in the morning.
Parent: “When dogs get up in the morning, they always say good day.”
Child: “Ruff, ruff, ruff, ruff”
Parent/Child together: “That is what they say.”
Parents can extend the learning at-home by making up their own verses and using different animals and sounds to teach their children.

Benefits of music

Preschool Curriculum

All over the world, parents bond with their babies through musical sounds and rhythmic movement. They rock and swing their children, put them to sleep with lullabies, make them laugh with nursery rhymes. Parents know instinctively what scientists have now proven: young children thrive on music. It’s one of the best vehicles for learning in early childhood development. Kindermusik takes musical learning to the next level; our curriculum is proven to improve child brain development. And, did we mention it's fun for kids and parents alike?!

MUSIC MATTERS

Psychologists, neuroscientists, and experts in early childhood development have demonstrated that music does more for children than bring them joy; it helps their brain cells make the connections needed for virtually every kind of intelligence. Kindermusik's curriculum is built on this research.

When young children are consistently engaged by music in an age-appropriate, socially accepting environment, they benefit at many levels:
  • Early Literacy. They gain the phonological processing, spoken language, and comprehension skills that are the foundation of reading.
  • Quantitative. They build the spatial-temporal and reasoning skills required for math, science, and engineering.
  • Social-Emotional. They develop social and emotional skills that are essential for school readinesslike the ability to regulate their responses and relate to others in complex ways.
  • Physical. By moving and dancing to music and playing simple instruments, children improve their gross and fine motor skills. Activities that encourage freedom within a fun and friendly structure spark their creativity.
  • Creative. Activities that encourage freedom within a fun and friendly structure spark children's creativity and provides inspiration.
And of course, they develop a lifelong love of music.

Music & the Senses - Try a Kindermusik Class

Music and the Senses

What better way to start spring than to learn through music and our senses. Are you enrolled for classes in April?

Kindermusik Classes - Learning Through Music & Our Senses“Experiences and sensations are learning.  Sensations form the base understanding from which concepts and thinking develop.  Therefore, sensory enriched environments are imperative to learning.”(Smart Moves by Carla Hannaford)

Multi-sensory learning is like glue for the brain.  According to Carla Hannaford’s work in Smart Moves, multi-sensory learning partnered with a positive emotional experience leads to learning, reasoning, thought.  That’s a Kindermusik class!

Kindermusik Classes use Music, Movement, and our Senses!

Each week in Kindermusik class we are using your child’s senses – eyes, ears, tongue, the skin, etc. – to build a foundation of knowledge.  It has been said that learning does not occur without movement, because the brain is not taking in information from the environment. As a result, your child is moving and learning and thinking and creating new ideas.

Sensory rich environments are also considered one of three major factors that lead to competency in adulthood.  What are the other two factors?

  • Freedom to explore the environment. In our Kindermusik classes, we keep it simple:
    1) Be safe and 2) Be Respectful.
  • Available parents that acted as consultants when the child had questions. That’s why Kindermusik includes parents in the learning process every week.  Parents are their child’s first and best teacher!
Compiled by Theresa Case, whose Kindermusik program at Piano Central Studios in Greenville, SC, is proudly among the top 1% of Kindermusik programs worldwide.

Behind the music on Kindermusik recordings: Howard Levy

Behind the music on Kindermusik recordings: Howard Levy

Howard Levy is a featured musician on one of Kindermusik's recordings.
Musician Howard Levy has played with some of the world’s best musicians – from the innovative, future-forward stylings of banjoist Béla Fleck to Dolly Parton, Bobby McFerrin, as well as symphony orchestra musicians around the world with his Concerto for Diatonic Harmonica and Orchestra.
Howard is also a featured musician on two Kindermusik recordings: “Riding the Rails” and “I’ve Been Working on the Railroad.”
Composer and arranger Jon Negus worked with Howard on the Away We Go! session. Here’s what Jon had to say about it:
When I was describing to Howard and the violinist (Peter La Bella) that “Riding the Rails” was going to be a duel between harmonica and violin, Peter said “Gee… I wonder who’s going to win that one….!”.
Howard was “off the charts” amazing even back then. A kind and gentle man who always educated while he played.
Musician, composer and arranger David Huff added this about the session:
Jon and I were completely awestruck by this man’s virtuosity. Though Howard got it in one take, Jon asked him to do it again just so we could repeat the experience of watching/hearing him play.
Howard is a world-touring musician, playing piano and harmonica. He’s also a dedicated educator teaching harmonica at the online school Artist Works. In this video, Howard talks about his musical beginnings.

Relaxation

Children learn many skills from adults, such as tying their shoes or reading a book. They must also learn how to relax, self-calm, channel feelings, and focus. With continued practice, persistence, and a little creativity, children learn not only how to relax, but also how to use this skill effectively every day, even in chaotic environments (Cox and Orlick 1996). Relaxing together with a little soothing, gentle music in the background will go a long way towards helping your child find his own calm amid the busy chaos that can be our lives.

TIP: Establish a Relaxation Ritual in your home, perhaps first-thing in the morning or just before bedtime. Turn on some quiet music and just relax with your child – holding them if they’re small enough or just cuddling up beside each other if they’re too big for your lap. Model being still and not talking, just breathing deeply and quietly enjoying one another’s company. You might also want to sing a simple lullaby to your child at the end. This will likely become a very treasured and much-anticipated time for you and your child(ren).

Pattern Awareness | Minds on Music

Pattern awareness is crucial to learning and memory. Just as in reading stories, singing and rhythmic speech expose participants directly to the patterns of language, including rhythm, speech sounds, syntax, and rhyme.

Tips for parents:
Patterns are all around – outdoors, indoors, in colors, how we arrange items on the counter or table, and even on the clothes we wear. With patterns surrounding us, it’s easy to play “pick up” pattern games with your child. First, point to the pattern. Have your child identify the individual parts. Then work together to point out how it all goes together. If there are objects that can be moved, you can even challenge your child to create some patterns of his own.
You can even try learning about patterns with your Kindermusik instruments!

The Power of Hello

At Kindermusik, we believe in the power of hello. So, each week, we begin class by singing: “Hello, hello let’s sing together!” Using your child’s name helps him make an emotional connection with the song and activity right from the start. It also encourages social interaction by inviting him to respond with his own greeting, such as a smile, wave, laugh, or even a little peek-a-boo. As an added bonus, it helps you learn the names of the other grown-ups in class, too! Everyday connection: Say hello to your little friends. Try singing hello to the people, animals, and objects you see around your house. Sing to Nanna…clap to doggie…wave to the bathtub, wave hello. Your child will love it and you will be encouraging social interaction, emotional connections, and even vocabulary development.
